Transformer Oil Testing & DGA for Used-Equipment Buyers

Oil reports help evaluate condition, but a single result does not establish a transformer’s remaining life. Review the sampling context, historical trends and other condition evidence.

Buyer takeaway: Oil reports help evaluate condition, but a single result does not establish a transformer’s remaining life. Review the sampling context, historical trends and other condition evidence.

Request the complete report history

Ask for dated reports linked to the unit’s serial number and sampling point. Identify whether the sample came from the main tank or a separate compartment and whether the equipment was operating or stored. Record recent oil processing or replacement that may affect comparison.

Separate different questions

Dissolved gas analysis examines gases associated with internal conditions and their development over time. Moisture and other oil-quality results provide additional context. Have qualified specialists interpret the reports together with loading, maintenance history and electrical tests.

Use findings in the purchase scope

Ask the reviewing engineer to identify unresolved concerns, additional sampling or testing, and any acceptance conditions. Define who pays for that work and who approves the outcome. Do not advertise a unit as healthy solely because a seller supplied one oil report.

Information to include in your review
Review areaBuyer action
IdentitySerial number, compartment, sample date and equipment state
HistoryComparable prior samples, processing and maintenance events
DecisionSpecialist interpretation, unresolved concerns and agreed follow-up
Does a good DGA report guarantee trouble-free operation?

No. DGA is one condition-assessment tool and must be interpreted with trends, context and other evidence.

Move from review to equipment selection

Send your specification or equipment ID, project location and required date. We’ll identify the information available for the proposed unit and the items that still need confirmation.

This guide supports procurement. Final design, suitability, testing and acceptance remain with the project’s qualified professionals and agreed documents.
